MDC-T elects new district leadership

mdc_logoJOHANNESBURG More than 200 branch members of the mainstream MDC formation, led by Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai, met in the sprawling Hillbrow suburb at the weekend to elect a new Johannesburg District leadership.

The newly-elected executive, to lead the district during the next five years, quickly promised to move with haste and further strengthen their party ahead of Zimbabwean elections, which are likely to be held later this year or next year.

We will give it our all and make sure that Zimbabweans all over South Africa and back home are given an extra impetus to want to vote for change, said Mnedisi Bhebhe, the partys new district vice chairman, in an interview with The Zimbabwean soon after the congress.

We will work closely with all those who want to see change in Zimbabwe, which will see us take out that old man Mugabe and restore democratic values and economic prosperity in our country.

Bhebhe, who spoke highly about factionalism that nearly tore the party apart, said his executive would work towards unifying the party so that it mounts a very strong challenge to overturn the Zanu PF control of Zimbabwe.

Our job now is to reach all corners of Johannesburg and ensure that Zimbabweans are mobilised to join the fight for a better Zimbabwe. The MDC-T as the biggest party in Zimbabwe should lead the democratic process both in and outside the country and that is what we will fight for, beginning now.

Newly-elected district spokesman, Kumbirai Muchemwa, called on Zimbabwean opposition parties in both the neighbouring country and back home to work for the good cause of removing Zanu PF from power.

We all have one goal and that is to remove Mugabe from power. We should get over party interests and put Zimbabweans in the forefront of whatever we are doing, so that we emancipate our country from the dictatorship and human rights abuses it is experiencing at the moment, said Muchemwa.

Remember Moyo was re-elected unopposed to chair the party, deputised by Bhebhe, who beat former vice-chairperson, Thokozani Tshuma for the post, while Milton Matshazi was re-elected unopposed for the Secretary-general post.

Trust Ndlovu retained his post as the partys district organising secretary, where he will be deputised by Bongani Mathe, while Gilbert Chamunorwa became the partys new district treasurer and Muchemwa became new spokesperson.

Five committee members Zwelithini Simelani, Hilda Makoni, Sandras Nkomo, Edward Mudzamiri and Sandra Ncube, were also voted in.

Thembi Sibanda became the new leader of the districts Women Assembly, while Giyani Dube retained his post as the district Youth Chairman.
