Minister gets tough on water

sipepa_nkomoGWERU - Water Resources and Development Management Minister Samuel Sipepa Nkomo (Pictured) has issued a directive barring councils across the country to use revenue from water charges on other projects.

He made the revelations while speaking to journalists in Gweru. Nkomo said funds collected from residents had been channelled into various other projects which have nothing to do with the precious liquid. This should come to an end and water revenue should be used to improve water services and nothing else, he said.

A committee to monitor the use of water money would be set up soon, he said, adding: “I have talked to Chombo (Local Government Minister) over the matter and I have since communicated to all urban and rural councils the directive stopping the use of water money on other things.” He also revealed that all councils have been ordered by his ministry to open bank accounts strictly for revenue from water charges.

“Those bank accounts will be used to administer how money collected from water charges is used by any council,” he said.

The minister added that he would be forced to come up with a statutory instrument if councils failed to comply.
