NRZ conditions unsafe

nrzHARARE - Enginemen have expressed concern over the deteriorating conditions at the troubled National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) saying that the lives of commuters were at risk.

Enginemen who spoke to The Zimbabwean said working conditions at NRZ were pathetic as most of the engines had seen better days and were in need of service. They also complained that most locomotives had shattered windscreens, making visibility impossible.

Workers blamed the former Zanu (PF) government for militarising the parastatal

which resulted in standards plummeting. Workers said National Social Security Authority (NASSA) must visit NRZ

premises and institute a full probe.

Efforts to get a comment from NSSA officials were fruitless but sources said they have embarked on an inspection exercise in Mutare and Bulawayo.
