Pig farmers want abattoir

pig2BULAWAYO - Pig producers here are engaged in negotiations with the Pig Industry Board (PIB) and the Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union (ZCFU) in an effort to establish an abattoir owned by the farmers and set to serve them.

The Zimbabwe Association of Pig Producers (ZAPP) national vice-chairman, Winston Babbage, said the association was still to decide the location of the abattoir that was mooted due to high slaughter prices being charged elsewhere.

We have identified two farms in Rangemore and Imbizo and we want to find out which one of the two would be more viable, he said.

Babbage said the pig producers would own the abattoir and every member would be expected to contribute towards the establishment of the facility.

We want the abattoir to be member-driven, it will be wholly owned by indigenous people where each member will be allowed shares.

He said the establishment of the abattoir would make it easy for the government to account for taxes and other levies. Apart from the establishment of the abattoir, ZAPP has embarked on a livestock input scheme in its bid rebuild the national herd of pigs to retain it to its previous status.

We are trying to rebuild the herd of pigs and therefore we have embarked on a massive livestock input scheme to avail building stock both existing and new players. The Government did it in 2000 and more than 200 people benefited, said Babbage.
