Residents in the area have accused cross border truck drivers of fuelling prostitution at the border town by offering the young girls money in exchange of sexual services.
Residents have also accused night club and beer hall owners of condoning prostitution by the young girls as they sometimes make no efforts to verify ages of those seeking entry into drinking places.
A security guard at the entrance of Zihulu beerhall, Charles Ndlovu told The Zimbabwean that some of the women who visited their place were school-going girls under the age of 18.
The problem is that some of the girls are big in stature and makes it very difficult to determine their ages just by looking at them, said Ndlovu.
Prostitution by young girls is really becoming a problem in Plumtree. You find a situation where these young girls exchange their bodies for maize meal or even soap, said Jonah Mlilo, an MDC councillor.
Mlilo said despite efforts by law enforcement agents to chase them away, young girls were increasing in number.
Some patrons at the night clubs and beer halls said fights frequently break out between the young prostitutes and the old ones who feel threatened by the schoolgirls.
