Schools destroyed by rains

MWENEZI - Some resettlement schools here were destroyed by the heavy rains that swept across the district in January this year, leaving pupils and teachers stranded.

Classroom structures apparently made of erected logs, plastered with mortar and thatch roofing collapsed, leaving pupils to congregate under trees for their lessons.

We have no classrooms now as you can see. We have our lessons in the open under the trees and we dont know if there shall be any improvements anytime soon, said a teacher-in-charge at a resettlement school at a farm called Masiriri in Mazetese.

The teacher-in-charge, who only identified himself as Gumbo, said their school sent reports to the district education offices in Neshuro and were told that their problem was going to be addressed soon.

Gumbo said that if it rained they had no alternative but to disband lessons.

This is a disturbing situation as we sometimes dismiss our pupils early if it rains, Gumbo said.

Efforts to get comment from the districts education offices at Neshuro Township were fruitless as officials continued to refer this reporter to their Provincial Education offices in Masvingo.
