Service chiefs to blame

mugabeHARARE - President Robert Mugabe (Pictured) had no idea that his opposition parties were being banned from holding rallies, a highly placed source within Zanu (PF) revealed.

It is the Service Chiefs led by the Commander Defence Forces, General Constantine Chiwenga, who wanted to tame Tsvangirais arrogance. The top armed forces officials were irked by claims by Tsvangirai that he confronted Mugabe on the rally issue. There is a wide deference between discussing and confrontation, said the source.

He also indicated that Service Chiefs could not allow MDC to disrespect national events such as the anti-sanctions campaign and Heroes burial. The source said that as long as the Tsvangirai and Welshman Ncube led parties did not take heed of the warning shots from Service Chiefs, they would continue to find life difficult.

Last week MDC-T and MDC-N rallies were banned by police at the Glamis Arena in Harare and Chitungwizas Unit L Hall, Saturday and Sunday respectively. This was the weekend when Zanu (PF) launched its anti-sanctions campaign around the

countrys provincial capitals. A rescheduled MDC-T Peace Rally was again banned at Zimbabwe Grounds in Highfield, last Sunday.

Meanwhile, angry people across the country called on MDC leadership to disrespect biased police directives which openly violated peoples basic rights such as freedom of expression and assembly. Continued respect of police bans on otherwise legitimate gatherings by MDC would be legitimizing the illegitimate police directives. Tsvangirai and his top officials should realize that its them who won elections not Mugabe and his bootlickers. MDC leadership should not promote dictatorship as if they were Zanu (PF) card holders. People want the MDC of yester year which had the stamina to take on dictatorship head-on, said a local who refused to be named.
