Teachers sublet for cash

MARANGE The influx of illegal diamond dealers coupled with poor remuneration and pathetic working conditions have forced teachers here to sublet their accommodation to prostitutes and illegal diamond panners.

Villagers in Chiadzwa confirmed to The Zimbabwean that teachers were taking advantage of the influx of illegal diamond panners, foreign buyers from Botswana, South Africa and Mozambique by letting their houses and classrooms for a fee. A local diamond dealer, Tinos Andrego, said the teachers were subletting the accommodation for US$300 a month to foreigners who spend their days indoors to avoid detection by security agencies, and do their dealings at night.

Hundreds of illegal diamonds panners are taking up residence in Chiadzwa diamond fields, despite the heavy presence of security forces and intelligence operatives. Officials from Ministry of Education, Sport and Culture in Mutare confirmed that they received reports from irate parents who were complaining about teachers who had turned the school classrooms into brothels and lodges.

This could be happening in all schools in Chiadzwa and we are instituting an investigation to get to the bottom of the matter. Its morally wrong to allow panners to frequent school premises. This compromises education standards, said the official.

A local teacher said there was nothing wrong with subletting their rooms becacuse their salaries were too paltry to meet their needs.
