More than 30 youths took to the street in a decision to take matters into their own hands. Public transporters were abandoning the route as the road was no longer passable due to its bad state. As local youths we felt challenged and obliged to maintain the road. We have since filled up potholes with gravel and cleared the water drainage system. This would send a wake-up signal to our local Member of parliament and the District Development Fund (DDF) that the road needs regular maintenance, said a youth leader who refused to be identified for security reasons.

Maintenance of most rural road networks is a responsibility of the cash strapped government-funded DDF. Besides being used by public transporters, the five kilometre stretch of gravel road is used by locals ferrying items by scotch carts. The road also makes life easier for school children and the sick who access educational and health institutions at Dhirihori Business Centre.
