Germany’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe Albrecht Conze met Zanu PF chairman, Simon Khaya Moyo, to discuss the incident that has caused a diplomatic tiff on Friday. Khaya Moyo, a fellow diplomat, knows the implications of the attack on the ambassador’s vehicle and what the Vienna Convention says. He swiftly apologised and distanced his party from the near fatal attack on the ambassador’s ride. Germany had strongly protested to Zimbabwe after a mob attacked the official vehicle of the top German envoy. The ambassador and his driver survived the attack Tuesday night unscathed, made a police report and protested to the ministry of Foreign Affairs. The official Mercedes-Benz limousine’s window was damaged but no one was physically harmed, the embassy said in a statement.
Thugs pounced on the ambassador’s limo at the Churchill Road/College Road, clobbering the rear right window twice in rapid succession, driving off at high speed leaving a badly damaged window. The ambassador and his driver were not injured in the attack, widely believed to be warning shots to the ambassador.
The attack comes hardly a week after the ambassador penned an article on empowerment, ‘Best practices for Empowerment a German view,’ that has infuriated the authorities.
