Moyo told The Zimbabwean that Nkala’s claims that then-Prime Minister Robert Mugabe acted without his knowledge, in cahoots with his trusted aides, State Security Ministers Emmerson Mnangagwa and Sidney Sekeramayi, in conducting the killings that eventually claimed 20 000 lives and left Matabeleland brutalized.
“Nkala is only saying that now because Zanu used him against his kith and kin and has now thrown him away and he regrets it. He was a willing tool of Zanu and his soul is tormented,” Moyo said.
Nkala, who is believed to be writing an autobiography, told VOA’s Zimbabwe Service last week that he had virtually no role in directing the killings, which started at an army barracks in 1981 and continued for five years. The systematic wholesale slaughter of Ndebeles and moderate Shonas was carried out by bands of soldiers drawn from units trained in killer tactics by the North Korean Army.
Up to 30 000 are still unaccounted for.
Moyo said: “In as much as we know that he and other Ndebeles never wielded any meaningful power in Zanu, it is also true that he seemed to enjoy everything that happened during Gukurahundi. His comments will never reverse what he said during Gukurahundi.”
