The 3 MVA furnace measuring 10.5m in diameter will consume 28 Megawatts of electricity per second – almost twice the amount used by average furnaces in the country like those found at Zimbabwe Metal and Steel Company (ZIMASCO), which use 17.5 Megawatts in the same period.
Equipment for the construction of the furnace is being imported from South Africa.
We are expanding our operations after a decade of problems and the building of the furnace is one of the projects underway, said the companys Production Manager Jabulani Chirasha.
It will be completed in a space of six months and will cost about $7 million, he said.
The furnace is expected to boost ferrochrome output of the company to over 25 000 tonnes a year. The companys largest shareholder, in partnership with Metmar Holdings of South Africa, is Benscore Holdings, a consortium of Zimbabwean businessmen.
Its establishment in Gweru in 1949 was influenced by chrome ore deposits in the mineral-rich Great Dyke and promises of inexpensivee Kariba hydro power.
