Zanu (PF) youths are believed to be responsible and three suspects were handed over to police at Masomera Growth Point for further investigation.
The housebreaking affected several village homesteads. What shocked people was that human faeces was deposited in a cooking pot at a respected local prophet, Mai Mharaparas pole and dagga kitchen which was also ransacked by the daring thieves.
There is a widely respected superstitious belief among villagers that if a thief discharges human waste after stealing, no one would be able to track him down, said an elderly villager, who identified himself only as Sekuru Chirume.
A small scale tobacco grower, Kamutuma, had two bags of fertilizer, a new bicycle and groceries stolen from him. He had just returned from tobacco auction floors and bought the fertilizer as part of his preparations for the next tobacco growing season. The bicycle was later recovered hidden in a nearby bush.
At Prophet Mharaparas house, the thieves helped themselves to leftover food before ransacking the house stealing plates and pots. They also left with Mharaparas apostolic gowns. Nothing was recovered from the theft.
It is alleged that Zanu (PF) youths engaged to terrorize innocent villages carried out the burglaries. They are believed to have targeted homesteads belonging to tobacco, tomato and chilli growers.
