Chaimiti laid to rest

Burial was in a private ceremony at Railways Cemetery. Afterward, the many facets of Chaimiti’s life, the first MDC mayor in the country voted in 2000, were highlighted in a 90-minute memorial service held in church.

Chaimiti died Wednesday at age 63. He succumbed to cancer.

Those crowded into the church sanctuary greeted with knowing laughter the reverend’s description of Chaimiti as a “man of enthusiasm.”

A succession of eulogists likewise spoke of Chaimiti’s characteristic energy and infectious laugh amid their praise for his life of service to his family, his community and his God.

The late Chaimiti was very humble and his humility should be followed by us all, said MDC president Morgan Tsvangirai. He spoke of Chaimiti’s passion and exuberance.

He is survived by a wife and several children
