Festival for prisoners on the cards

GWERU - Harare International Festival of Arts (Hifa) official Joe Wailer says he is planning to host an arts festival for prisoners, adding he has already secured approval from prison authorities to stage the event.

Wailer said Zimbabwes first ever prisoners festival will have two objectives to inspire inmates to turn away from crime and consider a career in the arts, while also saving as a therapeutic event for the inmates daily exposed to stressful conditions in the countrys overcrowded jails.

“We have secured permission from the prisons officials and now we are working on dates for the festivals,” Wailer told The Zimbabwean on Sunday.? According to Wailer the first festival will be held for prisoners in the Zimbabwe Prison Services central region that includes jails in the area stretching from Chiredzi to Gokwe. Visual arts, poetry, music and dance are some of the activities planned for the festival.
