Forced, free labour

HARARE - A well known Zanu (PF) activist and notorious traditional leader in Manicaland, Chief Saurombe, is forcing MDC supporters to provide free labour in his fields as punishment for supporting the popular political party.

Villagers who spoke to The Zimbabwean this week accused Saurombe of punishing MDC supporters by making them toil in fields belonging to him and his associates.

“Being an MDC’s supporter in Saurombe area is really a crime. The Chief has a list of MDC supporters who he calls when he needs cheap labour. We are slaves here,” said a villager who refused to be named for fear of victimisation. Another villager who identified herself as mai Rose said she had been providing labour to the chief since November last year.

“Most of us are now workers of the chief. The chief is hiding behind the Zunde ramambo programme for using us. What surprises us is that Zanu (PF) supporters are always let off the hook. I am tired of being used because of my political affiliation. I think its better for me to find another home stead” said the irate villager.
