Futsal Champs doomed

footballJOHANNESBURG - The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has postponed indefinitely the Futsal Championship, which Zimbabwe had been preparing for, after the hosts withdrew.

The continental football mother body said it could not secure an alternative venue after Burkina Faso pulled out.

The Confederation of African Football has announced that the 2011 Futsal Championship has been cancelled. Burkina Faso withdrew from hosting the event which was meant to start at the beginning of April and a replacement could not be found therefore the championship will not hold any longer, CAF said from its Cairo, Egypt headquarters.

Zimbabwe was scheduled to participate alongside Angola, host nation Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Egypt, Guinea Equatorial, Libya, Morocco, Mozambique, Nigeria, Senegal, South Africa and Tunisia .

Preparations the Futsal Championship were doomed from the beginning.

Initially slated for last December, the tournament was moved forward to April 2011 alongside the African Under 17 Championships in neighbouring South Africa. The draw had yet to be announced for the biennial tournament.

Futsal is a variant of association football that is played on a smaller playing surface and mainly played indoors. Its name is derived from the Portuguese futebol de salo and the Spanish ftbol de saln which can be translated as “hall football” or “indoor football”.
