Kasukuwere told Parliament recently that his ministry needed to recruit as many as 15 000 people, but politics and bad media coverage had stigmatised the national youth programmes and led to his ministry being denied permission to recruit. However, Mahlangu said that the MDC YA is well aware of Zanu (PF)s inclination to use the so-called youth officers as tools of violence to beat up MDC supporters.
Mahlangu said that before Kasukuere even talked about re-introducing the despised brain-washing institutions he should first consult the national youths who must have a say on whether they want the programme. Mahlangu added that instead of moulding youths the national service has only produced thugs who have caused untold terror in the communities. “Every peace loving Zimbabwean is aware of the kind of animals that come from the national youth service. We will defend our comrades and we will not let Zanu (PF) abuse them. The MDC has added value in the government and the presence of our trusted ministers has saved youths from abuse by people like Kasukuwere.”
After the introduction of the National Youth Service many qualified youths were denied entry at the country’s colleges on the grounds that they do not poses the despised national youth service certificate. Mahlangu described such a deprivation as a crime against progressive Zimbabweans. “People were punished for not subscribing to the national youth service and Kasukuwere is now proposing to take us backwards, he said.
