MDC appeals to JOMIC as cops continue to turn blind eye to violence

violence_during_electionMUDZI With the police failing to make arrests of Zanu (PF) thugs involved in hundreds of cases of political violence reported country-wide by MDC supporters, the party has appealed to JOMIC to take appropriate measures against the police and perpetrators of violence.

Although our people report to the police no action is ever taken against the perpetrators. At times the victims themselves have been arrested and portrayed as the accused, said the partys secretary for information in the province, Silas Gweshe.

Two police officers, identified only as Sgts Chanakira and Mbeure, who sought to discharge their duties impartially by brining to book perpetrators of violence have been victimised by their superiors.

We are appealing to JOMIC urgently to address the issues of threats and police unwillingness to arrest Zanu (PF) perpetrators, said Gweshe.

Though dockets have been opened, the police have not arrested the suspects. In March alone the police opened 10 dockets against suspected Zanu (PF) MPs – but have not made a single arrest.

Tonderai Chanakira of Chimwanda village in ward 17 was kidnapped and then beaten, he managed to escape and reported the case to police at Nyamapanda, where a docket number RRB10124295 was opened.

Another MDC activist, Wengai Mumvuri of Kamburanyanga village, was kidnapped by Zanu (PF) youths led by Blessing Kamoga. He was also beaten and made a report to the police where a docket RRB 0974147 was opened.

Even though the police went to the scene and saw the perpetrators, no arrests were made, said Gweshe.

According to Gweshe, behind this new wave of violence which the MDC-T fears could be similar to the chaotic scenes of 2008, is none other than the local MP Newton Kachepa.

The violence is well coordinated by Zanu (PF) leadership, including Kachepa. The MP continues to address illegal meetings fermenting violence. Please take action before the killings start all over again as the perpetrators are promising. Police inaction has made things worse, he said.

Perpetrators of violence who have been singled out include Jivas Chiutsa, a local councillor, Chamunorwa Makaza, Philip Chinyanga, Fightwell Siluba, Langton Masape, Martin Vhera, Michael Davaka and Patrick Kamburanyanga.
