The Zimbabwe National Roads Authority (Zinara), responsible for the countrys road network, had failed to yield results – besides collecting proceeds from tollgates, said the Minister, forcing him to look elsewhere for help.
We have since looked beyond our borders in an effort to rehabilitate our roads at a time when Zinara has failed. There have been leakages in Zinara and massive prejudicing at tollgates, he said.
The road authority has collected an estimated $1,3 million in revenue from tollgates since the inception of the inclusive government in 2009 – but there has been no improvement in the road network.
A South African company has shown interest in rehabilitating the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge highway at a cost of $500 million, said Mudzingwa.
