Mountaineers fall from grace

HARARE - Mountaineers appear to be losing their grip as the domestic cricket giants after their recent 18-runs loss to Tuskers in the finals of the Logan Cup at Harare Sports Club, last weekend.

The Mutare-based side began the competition as the defending champions after winning the coveted Cup last year and their failure to defend their title and maintain their dominance on the local scene has been met with disappointments.

Takashinga Cricket club life president and former Mountaineers head coach Steven Mangongo hopes the boys in green will reclaim their place as the invincible powerhouse next season.

The result has been so disappointing. Mountaineers have been consistent in winning trophies and falling from hero to zero like that is not how it should be for them, he said.

I can only hope that the boys will sit down, have a good look at themselves and find out what went wrong and try to rectify it. They have always been a powerhouse and not picking up one trophy this season is a bit disappointing.

Mountaineers ended as spectators of the Metbank Pro40 tournament after being booted out by Midwest Rhinos to miss the finals of the competition.

Earlier this year, they failed to lift the Stanbic T20 Championship, neither did they reach the finals. They were forced to watch Matabeleland Tuskers claim the top spot by beating Southern Rocks by nine wickets in the finals.
