The secessionists regard the two Matebeleland provinces and the Midlands as part of the Ndebele state of Mtwakhazi. They burnt the Zimbabwe flag at the gathering.
“This is a historic moment for the people of Mthwakazi. We have gathered for the first time demanding their freedom, sending a clear message to Chihuri and Mugabe that if they do not give us referendum by the end of the year, this will see how serious we are,” said MLF secretary for legal affairs, Sabelo Ngwenya.
“We call upon the regime to remove the law in section 42 of the constitution which states that no one is allowed to insult a Shona speaking person as this is a punishable offence, but it is not an offence to offend anyone from other parts of Zimbabwe,” he said.
They group included Sotho, Ndebele, Kalanga, Venda and Tonga speaking people, all of whom say they feel deprived of their rightful place in Zimbabwe. They said the march was the first step towards their break from colonisation by the Zimbabwe government.
