Name and shame the vultures

There are no prizes for guessing who are the political and business leaders that Zimplats chief executive Alex Mhembere told the media last week are in a tug of war for a slice of the platinum miner under the governments (read Zanu PF) controversial indigenisation scheme.

The same cabal of Zanu (PF) loyalists and security commanders that in a short 10 years plundered our once brilliant farming sector to leave us dependent on food handouts from international relief agencies has set its sights on mining and industry.

They looted commercial farms, now they want to finish off the little that remains of our once vibrant economy. They want to extend to the mining and manufacturing sectors the same chaos that destroyed agriculture with so much painful consequences for all of us.

Mhembere intimated to journalists that Zimplats would publish the list of all people seeking a stake in the company. We urge him not to be deterred by the threats that are sure to come after his statement last week but to go ahead and release the names of the suitors knocking at Zimplats door.

Likewise, we urge all executives of foreign-owned businesses targeted for seizure to expose the fly-by-night investors waiting to reap where they did not sow in the name of so-called indigenisation. Lets name and shame the vultures! For the record, let be known that we urge opposition to Mugabes indigenisation plan not because we are loath to Zimbabweans controlling the countrys industries and mines. Never!

We have said it before and we repeat: we will be the first to call upon the nation to rally behind any indigenisation plan that genuinely seeks to ensure that previously disadvantaged Zimbabweans and this does not include Zanu (PF) fat cats like Ignatius Chombo have a stake in the mainstream economy.

But we cannot support the empowerment plan championed by Mugabe which in truth is nothing more than a ruse to steal thriving businesses and hand them over to loyalists and other sycophants as a thank you for their support of his bizarre ambition to die in office.

The Zanu (PF) leaders economic indigenisation scheme is nothing but common theft just as his fast-track land reform was. We cannot support that. And no right thinking Zimbabwean ever should.
