Neglected NRZ premises turned into brothels

nrzGWANDA Deserted property belonging to the embattled National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) 40km from Gwanda has allegedly been transformed into a brothel.

The premises situated near Stanmore Business Centre is allegedly offering refuge to several female commercial sex workers – including school-going girls – to offer services to their clients after it emerged that the areas has been long abandoned.

The property, which includes cottages and railway equipment, has been lying idle for some time.

Concerned members of the community called on NRZ authorities demanding that they put their house in order as their mismanagement had become a menace to society.

We call on responsible members from the National Railways of Zimbabwe to secure their premises. A lot of elicit activities are carried out at one of their defunct premises from drug taking to prostitution. The situation has gotten out of hand that some school-going age kids are seen smoking marijuana or indulging into prostitution at the premises, which has of late been operating as a brothel, said a concerned parent, Lawrence Munoweyi.

Efforts to get an official comment from NRZ Public Relations Manager Fanuel Masikati were fruitless at time of going to print.

NRZ has been faced with a plethora of financial difficulties after it emerged that the parastatal was drowning in a US$274 million deficit of depleted fleet and recapitalization costs.

NRZ service delivery made a sharp decline over the past decade from a capacity of 18 million tones per year to 5.3 million tones.
