Drunken youth militia and war veterans here are reportedly causing sleepless nights to MDC-T supporters by assaulting and harassing them. Those responsible for the intimidation are working closely with former Zanu (PF) minister Munacho Mutezo and CIO operatives.
Ordinary people who are viewed as MDC-T supporters are being victimised and threatened with death if President Robert Mugabe and Mutezo lose in the envisaged elections slated for August this year.
The Nyanyadzi Training Centre is being used as a torture base.
Mutezo is eyeing the Chimanimani West constituency that covers Nyanyadzi area. Lynnette Karenyi is the incumbent legislator for the constituency.
Vehicles belonging to a local NGO, Hope For Zimbabwe Trust, are being searched and drivers of these vehicles are being asked to chant Zanu (PF) slogans while food meant for vulnerable members of the community is being confiscated by the overzealous youth militia.
The NGO has since temporarily suspended their operations in the area.
We stopped the operations in Nyanyadzi because we felt our programmes were being infiltrated. Our core values and mission as an NGO were being derailed by some people who were telling us what to do to fulfil certain political agendas, said Nhamo Muradzikwa, the Programmes Manager of the NGO.
Villagers in the area said they were being told to vote for Zanu (PF) in the forthcoming elections.
Last week some youths were moving-door-to-door telling us to vote for Zanu (PF) in the forthcoming elections. They told us that those who would vote for MDC-T would be known and they would be killed, said one villager.
The MDC office in Mutare has confirmed intimidation of their supporters in some parts of Manicaland.
