Zimbabwe, Madagascar and Swaziland have been thrown into turmoil, where institutionalised harassment, torture and murder of political and human rights activists have become commonplace, as dictatorships continue to stand in the way of ordinary citizens peaceful pursuit for democracy.
In a bid to pray for divine intervention, people from mostly South Africa, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique held their prayer vigil in Braamfontein and prayed for a peaceful transition and lasting peace in the region.
The vigil, organised by Johannesburg-based humanitarian organisation – Southern African Womens Institute for Migration Affairs (SAWIMA), was held under the theme, Giving Peace a Chance and according to the organisation, was the first of a series of such occasions to be held in the city.
We were praying for the whole of Africa, but with a special focus to our region, where ordinary people are feeling the pinch under the continuing economic, social and political problems affecting their countries.
