Traders buy old Zim dollar notes

zimbabwe_dollarsCHITUNGWIZA - Residents here are searching for the old Zimbabwe bank notes as a group of people are now buying the useless currency.

At the busy Jambaja market people queue patiently for their turn to sell their worn out Zim-dollar notes. The traders are buying the old two, five, 10 and 20 Zim dollar notes and unfortunately for those with higher denominations the prices are fixed at US$1.

It is really difficult to find the notes these days but some people still have them, said one buyer who only identified himself as David. The traders are giving no reason for the buying spree, fuelling speculation that this is a sign that the Zimbabwe dollar will one day return.

Presently the country is using a multi-currency system mainly trading in the green back and the South African rand. And while the monetary regimen introduced by Finance Minister Tendai Biti in 2008 has eased lives for many Zimbabweans it has also had its headaches.
