Two jailed for rhino poaching

CHIPINGE - Two Mozambican nationals were sentenced to a 13 year jail term each after they were convicted of three counts of illegally poaching rhinos at Chipangayi game park contravening section 128(a) of Parks and Wildlife Act Chapter 20:14.

The pair, Chiko Jossai Chithlangu of Sarasewo village, Chief Matsovero Machasi and Elias Chauko (36) of Bhudhala village, Chief Mangiza, Masanjeni area pleaded guilty to all charges when they appeared before magistrate Oliver Mudzongachiso.

The state led by prosecutor Tafirei Tandira heard that the two illegally entered into the country using unlawful entry points and

went to Chipangayi Game Park and hunted rhinoceros without permits.

The two, the court was told that they were in possession of dangerous weapons such as AK-47 assault rifle, an automatic gun with 57 live rounds and a flick knife. The poachers were arrested after they were spotted by police detectives and game rangers who were tracking rhinos spoor.

Police fired warning shots but they tried to resist but police pursued them and managed to apprehend them before they crossed into Mozambique. The magistrate said he sentenced the two to a length jail sentence because poaching of protected animals such as rhinoceros was on increase in the country.
