Zanu (PF) targets regional artists for jingle campaign

JOHANNESBURG - President Robert Mugabes Zanu (PF) party, still desperately trying to woo back the millions of its supporters who have, during the past decade, ditched the octogenarian in favour of the MDC, has stepped up its propaganda machinery to include regional artists.

A source inside the party told The Zimbabwean this week that the party was busy trying to persuade some popular Southern African artists to join its jingles campaign, in a grand plan that will see the release of musical albums singing praises to Mugabe and his party before the next elections.

We are currently speaking to some South African artists. The plan is to have several of them from the Southern African region, so that the outcome depicts regional solidarity behind Zanu (PF), said the source, who is a member of the partys youth league, but would not reveal names of the artists being targeted.

Things look promising and if all goes well, the first album will be out before the end of this year, in time for the elections. We had expected the album to be available at the Ministry of Information stand during the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair, but we failed to meet that target because we had not spoken to the artists.

Although the songs will be sold to the public, the source said it was hoped that piracy would also help in distributing the jingles at reasonable prices to the public.

It could not be established who would compose the songs, but indications are that Mugabes spin doctor, Jonathan Moyo, and members of the Zanu (PF) youth league would be tasked with that.

One artist who has already confirmed that he is close to signing a contract with Mugabes party for the musical onslaught is South African house/kwaito singer and producer, Lebogang Ledwaba, popularly known as Biblos.

The artist, who was at one point last year involved in a fight with South African mobile network operator MTN over the ownership of a 2010 World Cup musical campaign, Ayoba, revealed that he was early this week preparing to travel to Zimbabwe for more talks with Mugabes party, especially Minister of Youth, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment, Saviour Kasukuwere.

I do not support Zanu (PF), but I live on music and it looks like they like my singing, said the singer. We are yet to hold more talks on the project, but I am sure that a deal will be struck and we will start immediately. They have promised me that the project will be big and rewarding, so I am looking forward to it. Biblos recently released a song praising Julius Malema, the motor-mouth President of South Africas ruling African National Congress party and it looks as though Zanu (PF) has fallen in love with his hit.
