In the event of a Government shutdown, there may be delays in the processing of visa applications. Despite this, Zimbabwe is going live with a new U.S. Visa Service. This initiative is global, bigger than all of us, and goes live in Zimbabwe on Sunday. Visit http://harare.usembassy.gov for more details.

For the first time in Africa, the uniquely American mash up of Balkan, gospel, funk and jazz dance music will be showcased in Zimbabwe. The United States Embassy in Harare has met the HIFA challenge of engaging Zimbabweans from all walks of life and society by bringing Slavic Soul Party!, a nine man, New York-based musical group, to this years Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) April 26-May 1.

Congratulations Beatrice! Beatrice Mtetwa, one of Zimbabwes top human rights lawyers and a member of the Zimbabwe-United States Alumni Association (ZUSAA), has been awarded the Inamori Ethics Prize by Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, U.S.”

The top U.S. diplomat to Africa, Johnnie Carson, urged Nigerians to participate in their countrys local, state and national elections, which are scheduled to begin April 9 after having had been postponed for a week, and said the United States is closely monitoring Nigerias political environment and wants the country to hold a credible and transparent electoral process.

Today, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Michael Posner will release the Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2010, at the Department of State. The Country Reports on Human Rights Practices, commonly known as the Human Rights Report, covers the legal status of human rights in Zimbabwe and more than 190 countries and territories around the world.

Lovers of Jazz, we have a Jazz Legends film show for you on Wednesday April 13th at the Mannenberg. Time: 5.30 pm.

April 12, 1pm-3pm. The American Resource Center is celebrating National Library Week with an Open House and library tour. Come learn more about the incredible resources offered to the public at the ARCan extensive library, expert researchers and internet-connected computers. The event, just like the ARC, is free. Stay afterwards for our Food for Thought panel presentation from representatives from local libraries.

Deadline nearing for a life-changing opportunity to get a scholarship to study in the U.S. The United States Achievers Program (USAP) assists disadvantaged Zimbabwean A level students negotiate the application process for college and university scholarships in the U.S. The deadline for applications for the next cohort/ class is April 16, 2011.
