ZIMSTATS prepares for 2010 census

HARARE - The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstats) has started carrying out a mapping exercise to draw the boundaries for the 2012 census.

Zimstats acting director general, Moffat Nyoni, said they were expecting to finish the exercise this year. It will cover the whole country.

He said the census was important and urged cooperation so all the areas are covered.

This will be Zimbabwe`s fourth population census since independence in 1980.The first one was conducted in 1982 while the second was carried out in 1992 and another in 2002. The country`s population is said to be 14 million, but analysts say at least a quarter of the population lives outside the country mainly in South Africa but also in the UK and North America.

Finance Minister Tendai Biti recently said there was need to rejuvenate the ZIMSTATS office because it plays a critical role in the development and growth of economy.
