The Mfendawonye project is funded by a local NGO, the Gungano Poor Fund (GPF) and assists vulnerable members of the society through the provision of building materials and loans, which are repaid over a long period of time. Zimbabwe Homeless People`s Federation National Coordinator Davias Muvindi said their organisation had managed to built 20 houses in Ultra high density suburb and has bought 20 stands in Spitzkop North extension which are yet to be constructed.
ZHPF is a branch for the Salem Dwellers International (SDI) which operates in 42 countries. Ward 9 councillor Simon Manda said the project had assisted greatly in reducing the backlog on the councils housing and residential stands waiting list. We really appreciate the work being done by these NGOs in their endeavour to alleviate shortage of decent accommodation in the town, said Manda.
Many people were left homeless in the country after former Zanu (PF) government embarked on an internationally condemned Operation Murambatsvina/Restore Order.
