Cops to insure farms against animal damage

zrp_logoBULAWAYO - The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) in Matabeleland North province will insure its agricultural produce to guard against unwarranted losses.

The announcement comes after the police had part of its maize and sugar beans destroyed by a herd of seven elephants at its Eland farm in Inyathi last week. The wild animals destroyed about 20 hectares of the 140 hectare crop. Matabeleland North operations coordinator Assistant Commissioner Musarashana Mabunda said: A herd of seven elephants trespassed into our maize field which had green mealies and created a sort of liberated zone.

When I was carrying out an examination I realised that the elephants also trampled our sugar beans as well. We had delayed insuring our farm and this latest incident will make us expedite the process and engage a reputable insurance company.

The police have over the years lost a considerable amount of its crops to elephants and veld fires. The Matabeleland North police force embarked on extensive agricultural projects at their Eland Farm as a way of generating income and curbing the dependency syndrome. The farm is also home to a thriving poultry project, goat, sheep and cattle rearing.
