Free clinic for Zims in UK

LONDON - Project:London is a free clinic based in Bethnal Green providing medical care to those without a doctor. Last year the clinic saw over 1200 people with a range of complaints.

The clinic opened its doors in 2006 and is run by Doctors of the World UK, a humanitarian organisation helping vulnerable people worldwide. Project:London does not replace the National Health System (NHS) but helps those who have difficulty getting access to healthcare. For example, someone may lack the paperwork receptionists request at the time of registering, they may lack knowledge of how the system works, or may not be aware of their rights.

A Zimbabwean patient, Charity (name changed), originally from Harare, came to the UK 10 years ago, She says Project:London was like a lifeline for her.

I came to the U.K with the intention of studying for a nursing course, but my dreams soon faded away because of my legal status in Britain. A company in Zimbabwe had promised to help me with work and accommodation once I got here, but they were empty promises in the end. I was stuck with nowhere to go and I knew I couldnt find work because of my situation. A friend of the family helped and I started to work as a babysitter and looking after the elderly. It has been a very sad and tough chapter of my life. I contacted Project: London for health reasons, and not only did they help me recover but they ended up putting me in touch with a legal advisor and a lawyer. Thanks to Project:Londons help I am applying for indefinite leave to remain in the U.K and waiting to hear back from the Home Office, she said.
