He (Fletcher) has obviously got great skills as coach and all the players from his previous teams seem to be supporting him and saying it is a pretty good appointment. So I wish him all the best in the English tour later this year, the former Australian wicketkeeper said.
Gilchrist, who is leading the Kings XI Punjab in the ongoing India Premier League, refused to comment on whether the 62-year-old former England coach will be able to replicate the success he achieved as the coach of the England team.
I won’t pass comments on his age. It is more what skill he brings and his level of enthusiasm. He had all that in abundance when he was coaching other teams. I do not know Duncan all that well. I met him a couple of times when I played against the team he coached. It is hard for me to comment whether he is going to be successful or not.
Harare-born Fletcher is former Zimbabwean cricketer, formerly captain of the senior team.
Appointed to lead World Cup winners India on April 27, 2011, he is largely credited with rejuvenating the fortunes of the then flagging English team, with the team rising from bottom of the Test rankings to second under his tenure as coach.
His biggest matches since his appointments are a series of One Day and Test Internationals in England later this year.
