Gunners, Monomotapa slipping into oblivion

moses_chungaHARARE - The 2008 and 2009 premier soccer league champions, Monomotapa and Gunners, have lost their respect as competitive sides on the local scene without coaches Norman Mapeza and Moses Bambo Chunga (pictured).

While it has been evident with local teams that participation in the Caf Champions League cripples clubs financially, leading to their instability and failure to maintain their valuable players, the departure of the most influential coaches, Mapeza and Chunga, stands as a blow up to this day.

Gunners, who had a brilliant start to their second year in the competition, won the championship title under the guidance of Bambo in 2009, while Monomotapa rose from grass to grace under the auspices of Mapeza in 2008.

But both teams beginning of their campaign this year leaves many convinced their previous victory was their first and the last.

Monomotapa have only won one match out of six played and that has seen the former champions on position 11 on the 16-team log table. Gunners who have found themselves on the bottom of the table as they are still to win their first match after suffering two loses and three draws before their match against FC Platinum yesterday.
