The villagers said their area has been lagging behind in terms of development for years due to negligence by politicians, but thanks to commissioning of $3 million Nyamhingura hydro station by Eastern Highlands Tea Company and its partners.
The projects will see more clinics, schools, business centres and households which were relying on solar energy electrified.
The hydro power station will produce 1.1 megawatts which will directly benefit rural business, clinics and households in Zindi Village of ward 3, Mapokana and Sagambe villages of ward 11.
Nyangani Renewable Energys Project Engineer, Rob Goddard, told The Zimbabwean that the project was constructed at a cost of $3 million. The third phase of the project is expected to cover the whole of Manicaland province in 2013, which requires a total of four megawatts.
Villagers said access to electricity would help them venture into lucrative income-generating projects such as canning and food processing. We want to add value to our produces so that get we get better rewards. Thanks to Nyangani Renewable Energy our dream has finally come true. We have electricity to boost production, said Ruth Mavhatu (33) a local horticulture farmer.
