The party is riddled by Deep-rooted factionalism and the inability to transform itself into a popular party as it has continued to rely heavily on the security sector, says the MDC. Desperate to avert an implosion, Zanu (PF) has been pushing for elections this year but the MDC and now SADC have been clear that elections can only be held after the completion of an agreed election road.
The MDC will next week embark on a series of intensive consultations with its grassroots members to assess existing trends, exchange ideas, take advice and instructions on how to tackle the stubborn Zanu (PF) stains and still lurking in isolated rural areas. By the time we have the next elections, and certainly not in 2011, Zanu (PF) will be so fractured and weak that Zimbabwe would see it as a mere memory, read the statement.
Recently Tsvangirai said President Robert Mugabe had lost control of the country to a powerful grouping of army generals. The aging, and ailing, dictator has also came under increasingly pressure from his party to appoint a successor. The MDC forecasts doom if Mugabe makes a mistake of appointing a factional leader as his successor.
Mugabe has historically balanced the two factions, led by retired army general Solomon Mujuru and Emerson Mnangagwa, in order to maintain his stronghold but is now under pressure to anoint a successor. Political analyst Ernest Mudzengi, said there was need for a concerted effort in order to ensure that Zanu (PF) is removed.
The MDC needs to convince the people that it will move for democracy. The issue of factionalism alone cannot lead one to say that Zanu (PF) will be finished. Since 1963 Zanu (PF) has always been affected by factionalism. In fact the party was borne from factionalism, said Mudzengi.
