Parents kick out troublesome school head

MASIKANA - Parents here have had enough of headmistress Constance Mupombwe, whom they accuse of poor leadership and dishonesty.

Angry parents last week barricaded the entrance to Masikana Secondary School administration offices to bar the school head from entering. The siege forced district and provincial school authorities to remove the headmistress while considering the way forward.

Mupombwe was found on the wrong side of the law by a finance audit carried out by the district education offices recently. She failed to account for $485 deposited in the school bank account. The inventory of school property was in shambles with some furniture missing. She illegally put a hectare of school land under tobacco last season and went on to use school children as unpaid labour at the project.

We also found out that she indiscriminately cut down trees around the school for her tobacco curing. To further strain relations with parents, she remained unrepentant. She continued using hate speech against parents, school children and fellow teachers. Her loose moral conduct was also cause for concern for parents who declared enough was enough, said an angry parent.

The standoff forced District and Provincial Education Officers, Makwindi and Machaka, to hold marathon consultations with parents on Wednesday. The parents refused to budge and Mupombwe was eventually forced to leave the school.
