Zanu (PF) robs police depot to feed mourners

zanupf_truckHARARE - Zanu (PF) last week looted food from the Police Morris Depot in order to feed mourners at the funeral of Moven Mahachis son Zvenyika, who died in Nyanga.

According to police recruits, two trucks, including an Isuzu, registration number AAP 2629 and a Toyota mini truck, registration number 1570, on Wednesday went to the police training depot and collected vegetables and beef.

We saw the vehicles taking the meat and we were told that it was for the funeral of the late Mahachi, said the recruit.

Sources at the training depot, where recruits are confined to a strict regimen that includes half-cooked meals, said it was common practise that Zanu (PF) officials took food from the depot whenever there was a funeral of a senior party member.

During Independence Day celebrations, burials of heroes and other national events Zanu (PF) activists feed from the police depot, and recruits say that the food is never replaced.

Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Wayne Bvudzijena denied any connection between the police and the Mahachi funeral.

I am failing to see the connection between the Mahachi funeral and the police. I dont see how food would be collected for that purpose, he said.

Efforts to get a comment from the Ministry of Home Affairs, which is in charge of the police, were fruitless. Paul Madzore, chair of the Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Home Affairs, said the committee would investigate the matter.

I hope that it is not true because the police, especially the junior officers, have been complaining of hunger. Police Commissioner Chihuri himself came to Parliament complaining that the money they were allocated was too little, yet we hear reports of food being taken from the depot, said Madzore.
