Zapu struggle takes new twist

zapu_congress_supportersJOHANNESBURG - The struggle for control of the opposition Zapu partys South African province took a comical twist this week, when members of the George Mkhwanazi-led faction rubbished their suspension by their rivals, led by Dingilizwe Mpondo.

They even went further and suspended six senior members of the Mpondo-led faction, who they accuse of having participated in events that brought the partys name into disrepute.

The Mkhwanazi faction said the mass-suspensions by the illegal Provincial Executive Committee were null and void.

Those who do not understand the workings of modern democracy must should never be allowed anywhere near positions of influence, said the factions spokesman, Walter Nsunungli Mbongolwane a week ago.

He also alleged that Zanu (PF) agents had infiltrated the re-launched opposition and were fighting pro-democracy forces that are determined to wrestle control of the party.

The authentic ZAPU RSA leadership will continue to mobilise the people and help build ZAPU structures regardless of the name calling which the ZANU (PF) agents are so fond of coining. The authentic leadership of ZAPU RSA has already verified and confirmed as true, information given to a Sunday paper by one of our members that indeed our structures have been hijacked by agents of ZANU (PF), namely Dingilizwe Mpondo Nkomo, Luke Sayi, Thulani Dube, Ngqabutho Sibanda, Pretty Ncube and the gullible Council of Riggers, he added.

Taking the fight further and turning it into a circus, the Mkhwanazi faction, which maintains that it only read about its members suspension in The Zimbabwean, began distributing its own letters to the same effect, dated May 9 and signed by Mkhwanazi, whose designation is entered as RSA PECInterim Chairperson.
