Armed Zambians jailed

Three Zambian men have been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment each for unlawfully entering the country and firearm possession.

Charles Musango, 48, Kashweka Semucheka, 36, and Peter Joel Mutunha, 30, faced Hwange magistrate, Peter Tomupeyi Madiba on charges of entry by evasion, smuggling and possession of dangerous weapons.

Prosecutor Tinomupeyi Mbiza told the court on May 22 the three entered the country from Zambia through Sebungwe area along the Zambezi River.

They were stuck in the Sebungwe area for some days and on June 4 were located by a villager who contacted police, who alleged they were carrying an AK47 rifle and eight live rounds of ammunition.

Musango, Semucheka, and Mutunha pleaded guilty to the offence and were convicted and sentenced to an effective 10 years in prison.

In their defence they said they were going to Chizarira National Park to poach. Meanwhile, a Hwange woman will spend nine years behind bars for stealing and selling cattle belonging to her neighbour.

Melina Mumpande, 31, of Lubangwe village, appeared before magistrate Peter Tomupeyi Madiba charged with the stock theft.

Prosecutor Sifelumusa Fuzane alleged Mumpande stole two cattle belonging to her neighbour Siphiwe Ncube and sold them in August 2009.

Ncube then reported the matter to the police following a tip off the accused had been seen with the cattle.
