Neither a new SADC initiative nor the continuation of European and American targeted sanctions against President Robert Mugabe and his henchmen look likely to halt the attacks, aimed at securing a the aging leader victory in next year's legislative elections.
Nyanhongo, a retired Brigadier General, has terrorised the Nyanga community, forcing villagers to flee into neighbouring Mozambique. He employs the bitter lexicon of the Chimurenga War, evoking passions which, as each day passes, seem less and less susceptible to external diplomacy.
There are fears, however, the tensions will escalate and test the loyalty of Zimbabwe's already demoralised army at Brigade 3 in Manicaland.
“The community has been traumatised by Nyanhongo since he came to Nyanga North immediately before the COPAC outreach programme," Mwonzora said.
“He has opened up military bases at Shiriimwe Business Centre in Nyamaropa and at Taziwa hotel in Nyakomba, as well as at his homestead in Nyadowa and another at Kanyimo business centre in ward 4.”
Mwonzora said the bases were being manned by Zanu (PF) youths under the orders of Nyanhongo.
“I complained about the existence of the bases to the police who then convened a meeting to discuss these military bases but Nyanhongo then went ahead and opened another military base at Nyangombe refugee camp.”
“Again I lodged a complaint to the Zanu (PF) DCC chairman Moses Gutu but nothing was done,” he said.
