Demilitarise villages-Biti

Tendai Biti, the MDC Secretary General, says ZANU PF should recall soldiers from villages across the country and stop harassment and violence against locals.

Biti who is also the Finance Minister, made the call in his strong worded address to party supporters at a peace rally held at Mkoba stadium in Gweru last week.

ZANU PF is understood to have deployed soldiers and war veterans in the country’s rural areas so as to instil fear in the innocent civilians and quell support for MDC ahead of next elections.

In Zaka, war veterans’ leader Jabulani Sibanda has been terrorising villagers while in Manicaland Army General Douglas Nyikayaramba has been cited as leader of a wave of terror against perceived MDC supporters.

Recently an MDC supporter identified as Mbiti of ward 15 Masvingo was reportedly killed by soldiers from 4.1 brigade and Biti bemoaned this case.

“ZANU should remove the soldiers from the villages and make them stay at the barracks. That is their place. We do not want this situation in which soldiers in uniforms act as ZANU PF’s political commissars,” Biti said.

“An end should also be seen on unconstitutional treasonous statements being uttered by disgraced people like Nyikayaramba,” he added.

Biti said MDC has survived violence in the past decade but party cadres have been lost countrywide.

“At the on-going SADC brokered inter-party talks, one of our biggest issues regards the immediate implementation of the security sector reforms and that should take place.”

State security agents’ leaders in the country have openly declared their allegiance to ZANU PF which breaches the constitution which requires them to be impartial.
