At independence in 1980 he was appointed minister of Labour and Manpower Planning, but was sacked after a lengthy murder trial in 1981.

Edgar Tekere dies
HARARE Former Zanu (PF) secretary general and cabinet minister, Edgar Tekere (pictured), died today. Details are sketchy at this stage. Tekere was born on April 1, 1937, and served as a member of the Zanu Dare reChimurenga High Command during the war of liberation.
