Mapfumo aims for world stage

HARARE Urban grooves classic rapstar Leonard Mapfumo said he is planning to take his music regional and international following the release of his forthcoming album by early July this year.

With his richly composed, mature lyrics and layback beats, Mapfumo is likely to take the world by storm.

Speaking in an interview with Showbiz On Sunday the Maidei hitmaker revealed that he is ready to take his music beyond the borders and also intends to use his artistic abilities to break down racial barriers.

I want to try other avenues and this time I want to try something that has never been tried before. I want to take my music regionally and internationally. It is the dream of every musician to be recognized internationally and I believe the time has come for me to take that path.

I also want to use my music to act as a tool to break racial barriers. Im working on my latest album, which will mark the beginning of my (international) journey. I want to give an album of a lifetime. Im trying to feature artistes across genre barriers from Africa and Europe; South Africa, Malawi and Netherlands as well as local ones. I will put my extra efforts. Some cooperates have also shown interest in the project, he said.

Mapfumo added that he had already finished recording the first single titled Hello of the 10-track album – which is still in the laboratory – and is working on the lead single, for which he intends to produce a video.

The self composed family man said his album would focus on the need to commit in relationships and inspiring the ghetto youths to take life serious.

The album will follow in the footprints of its predecessor (The Journey). It will be talking about love, faithfulness, commitment and encouraging the ghetto youths to live life positively. Things are hard in the ghetto but the youths need to know that the world is for them to conquer, do what is right. At times its like you are walking in a jungle but when you take your first step you will finally see that there is heaven ahead of you, advised Mapfumo.

After his ground breaking hit song Seiko (How) featuring Roki, Mapfumos music career has grown in lips and bounds. His previous album managed to sell a commendable 2 500 copies and 1 000 copies for the lead single Two Chete (just the two of us).
