Chief Executive officers at the countrys parastatals are understood to be awarding themselves salaries of up to $13 000 a month, in addition to huge allowances at the expense of service delivery. Speaking at a tour of Munyati Power station near Kwekwe, Moyo said his ministry was presently pushing all parastatals to present audited financial statements so that their operations could be scrutinised.
But some of them are not cooperating, he added, but would not be drawn into naming the deviants. He said new legislation was being put in place to ensure that the ministry had more power over parastatals. Zimbabwe United Passengers Company (ZUPCO) and the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) are some of the parastatals that have been linked to corrupt activities in the past.
The bill in the pipeline defines how the parastatals should operate and spells out punishments for those who engage in corrupt activities.
