
UNICEF Consultant and Media Specialist, Bertha Shoko, said Mtukudzi had been named because of his sterling work in promoting children's rights not only in Zimbabwe but internationally.
Mtukudzi is already Zimbabwe's Music Ambassador, a title he shares with top international gospel musician, Pastor Bonnie Deuschle of the Celebration Ministries International (CMI).
Accepting the award, Mtukudzi pledged to advocate for the rights of children in Zimbabwe and in the region.
Making the Award, UNICEF Country Representative, Dr Peter Salama, said Mtukudzi was nominated to be an advocate of children's lives and rights in the Eastern and Southern African region.
He said this had been done in recognitin of the role Mtukudzi had played in promoting the rights of children and fighting the HIV/AIDS "stigma" and discrimination through his music.
Mtukudzi has released several local and international hits.
He has also shot some local short films and documentaries, where he has been an actor including in the popular "Neria", among the best locally produced short films to-date.
Mtukudzi recorded a hit song "Neria" before acting in the buster short film shot entirely in Zimbabwe's rural areas.
In this film he acted with Jessica Mungoshi, another top film star in Zimbabwe.
