Police abuse of women rampant: ZLHR

Zimbabwe police have been accused of raping and brutally abusing women Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights said police officers had become notorious for soliciting sex with commercial sex workers detained in patrols.

Several reports have been made about alleged rape but no arrests made. At other times, police have been tough on women caught in the avenues areas they are denying people their right to movement.

"The police have no right under the constitution or any law to take advantage of women and sexually abuse them because they are loitering or suspected to be loitering for the purpose of prostitution," ZLHR said in a statement.

"It is unfortunate to note that many women who have been raped and abused have not been able to access justice owing to an uncooperative police force that seeks to protect each other."

The lawyers called for female officers to investigate prostitution to prevent abuse. Meanwhile last Thursday Harare police stormed a Westlee house in which an NGO was conducting a training workshop on empowerment issues with over 100 women.

The organisation’s trainer, Ireen Bondokoto, was arrested and the offices – known as the Community Health and Empowerment trust – were ransacked.
