RGM: Life President?

The presidential election, in which ailing octogenarian Robert Mugabe desperately hopes to win another five-year term, could take place at the beginning of 2012.

Zanu (PF) insiders leaked the news as MDC sources warned that Mugabe was planning an ultra-racist re-election strategy, in which all foreign-owned firms would be grabbed and given to his cronies and he would proclaim himself president for life.

The 87-year-old president's rapidly deteriorating health – he was rushed to the Medical Chambers last week for an emergency procedure – has made his henchmen eager to get voting out of the way, lest civil unrest set in.

Anger at the government's isolationist policies is also expected to rise, as the West is certain to refuse to capitulate to Zanu (PF)s ridiculous ‘anti-sanctions’ petition and will maintain its targeted measures in protest at the appalling human rights situation.

The sources believe the latest round of anti-MDC harassment has been inspired by a Zanu (PF) document circulated last month calling for systematic harassment of the "opposition" before the elections.

They said Zanu (PF) was imploding, and even trusted elements of the secret police, the Central Intelligence Organisation, were threatening to defect to the MDC.

CIO officers claimed to have received instructions to begin fomenting unrest, orders they considered untenable.

There are hopes within the ruling party that moderates and the more rational-minded leaders with business connections might realise the ultimate folly of Mugabe's reckless gamble.

Splinter groups are said to be forming around Joice Mujuru, seen as a reformist, who has already attracted Mugabe's ire and been excluded from his inner circle.

"She could be trusted," said the MDC source. "But whether they can really take on Mugabe, in this current madness of his, remains to be seen."

While the economy has grown in the past two years, the almost 10 percent growth registered in the first two years of the GNU, it is expected to slow down to just 5 percent this year due to the indigenisation policy, according to the IMF.

No amount of propaganda can hide the fact that the black majority is suffering terribly because of Mugabe's indigenisation drive, with rising joblessness.

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's recent Midlands trip, where he toured major industries, brought him face-to-face with the devastation that indigenisation has wrought on the economy.
